Patricia de Mayo Holds a first class degree in Arabic Cultural Studies from SOAS University in London as well as a Master degree with Merit in Middle Eastern Music from the same institution. she also has a PGCE teaching diploma and she has lectured at Goldsmith College London and Cambridge University. Her main occupation is musician, she has taught English and German as well as music. This lecture/workshop focuses in general on the subject of humour, and in particular, but not exclusively on humour as expressed in English speaking cultures. It will show you some examples of ‘British humour’ in the form of audio visual material. We will look at the material, try to determine if the humour translates into other languages and cultures, specifically into Arabic, i.e. will you find it funny or not, and if you do, why it is funny? We will discuss different types of humour and ask questions like: what is humour, what is the significance and purpose of humour and when and why does it occur? If time allows we will also try to do some role playing and devise scenarios, where we will try to implement the results of our discussions.
